Don Tibbits Images > The Military Museum in Belgrade was founded in 1878. The museum has over 3000 ancient and modern items. These include Roman swords and helmets, Greek helmets and daggers, Serbian heavy knight's armor, axes, shields, helmets, crossbows, armoured gloves, as well as Western medieval weapons. There are also more modern guns, firearms, and elements of soldier's uniforms and equipment. Diormas, plagues, and displays illustrate the use and historical context of the museum's collection. Don Tibbits Images > Belgrade (Serbian: ???????, Beograd is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city lies on two international waterways, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkan Peninsula. With a population of 1,630,000 (official estimate 2007), Belgrade is the largest city in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, second largest city on the Danube river and the fourth largest in Southeastern Europe, after Istanbul, Athens, and Bucharest.

Don Tibbits Images > MIHAILO OBRENOVIĆ. (Kragujevac, 1823 - Belgrade, 1868), Knez of Serbia. He became Prince of Serbia (again) in 1860. Mihailo paid special attention to military organization and in 1861 established a national army with about 50,000 soldiers in its ranks. Up to date weaponry was provided, and Serbia became the strongest military power in the Balkans. Mihailo's aim was the final liberation of his country from the Turks. Counting on a war with Turkey, he formed alliances and made agreements with other Balkan nations - Montenegro, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. Just when the preparations for the war were completed Mihailo was assassinated while out walking in Košutnjak in 1868.

Don Tibbits Images > The Cathedral of Saint Sava or Hram svetog Save in Belgrade, Serbia is the largest Orthodox church currently in use. The church is dedicated to Saint Sava, founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and an important figure in medieval Serbia. It is built on the Vracar plateau, on the location where his remains are thought to have been burned in 1595 by the Ottoman EmpireÕs Sinan Pasha. From its location, it dominates BelgradeÕs cityscape, and is perhaps the most monumental building in the city. The building of the church structure is being financed exclusively by donations. The parish home is nearby, as will be the planned patriarchal building.
