Liberty Leading the People (July 28, 1930). Eugène DELACROIX. Charenton-Saint-Maurice (Val-de-Marne), 1798 – Paris, 1863. "I’ve embarked on a modern subject—a barricade. And if I haven’t fought for my country at least I’ll paint for her," Delacroix wrote to his brother in 1830. With this painting celebrating the revolution of 1830 which saw the fall of Charles X and the rise to power of Louis-Philippe, the artist was creating a modern allegory that was so powerful and original that it ended up becoming, in the collective imagination, the very image of Liberty on the move. Acquired at the Salon of 1831. Acquired by The Louvre in 1983. Denon. 1st Floor. Mollien. Room 77.
