The charming little rural pub is a family business, run by the Driver Family for over 27 years. In 1992, it was acquired by the present owner’s parents, and is now run by Tadhg and Neasa Kelly.
The Shanty Bar is famous for “the man upside down in the barrel”, sawdust on the floor, a bath-tub in the men’s toilet used as a urinal, the ladies toilet involves passing through the saloon-style doors,Christmas decorations that stay up all year round, wellie clad boots through the roof,an old traditional pot-bellied stove and much more. It is renowned for its Guinness, which is mainly due to the short draw with the barrels under the counter. Every nook and cranny displays items of interest depicting Kerry and old rural Ireland both past and present with old antiques, pictures and other unique treasures lined on the shelves which add to the cosy ambiance of the interior. The bar always has a lively atmosphere where many tourists flock to it. It has been attracting international tours since it has been established. The Shanty allows tourists an opportunity to experience a true Irish Pub culture, while relaxing beside a cosy turf fire. It is enjoyed by many a local for its story-telling, sing song and craic. The pub is located in a very central area which is easily accessible from surrounding townlands. The pub is just a short journey outside of Killarney and Tralee town.
